SALON'S TV PICKS FOR
WEDNESDAY, DEC. 16, 1998
BY JOYCE MILLMAN

S P E C I A L S

The Kennedy Center Presents (check local times, PBS) has the Washington Opera's production of Leoncavallo's "Pagliacci," with Placido Domingo singing the title role. An operatic moment of another sort: Scary Spice Meets The Artist (9 p.m., VH1) features the Spice Girl interviewing the Formerly Known One. It's a Virtual Bill Christmas (9:30 p.m., MTV), in which the clay puppet president shows us why he's lonelier than Elvis without Priscilla this yuletide season.

S E R I E S

The not at all overexposed Jerry Springer is the subject of a new Biography (8 p.m. EST/9 PST, A&E). The kids organize a swing dance AIDS benefit on Beverly Hills, 90210 (8 p.m., Fox), complete with music from the Brian Setzer Orchestra. Dateline NBC (8 p.m., NBC) counts down the "most intriguing" people of the year. Oh, God, please not Ken Starr again. Newlyweds Maxwell and Fran face their first Christmas vs. Chanukah conflict on The Nanny (8 p.m., CBS). Dharma goes football crazy on Dharma and Greg (8 p.m., ABC), so, naturally, 49er Steve Young drops by. On Party of Five (9 p.m., Fox), the holidays are complicated by the arrival of Daphne's flaky mother (guest Karen Black). Last week on The Drew Carey Show (9 p.m., ABC), Drew began dating a woman in her 60s, played by Shirley Jones. This week, he meets her son, played by Danny Bonaduce. If you didn't grow up with "The Partridge Family," this means nothing to you. If you did -- "C'mon Get Happy"!
