SALON'S TV PICKS FOR
WEDNESDAY, DEC. 23, 1998
BY JOYCE MILLMAN

S E R I E S

John Cleese guests on a rerun of 3rd Rock From the Sun (9 p.m., NBC); he plays a new professor who's even more pompous and in love with himself than Dick. Drew, Lewis and Oswald's band get an offer from the Ramada Inn on a repeat of The Drew Carey Show (9 p.m., ABC). On a rerun of Charmed (9 p.m., WB), Piper and Phoebe cast a love spell, and Prue is menaced by a sorcerer who invades her dreams. Encore! Encore! (9:30 p.m., NBC) isn't a rerun tonight, not that anybody cares. A new American Justice (9 p.m. EST/10 PST, A&E), "Fall from Grace," looks at the trials of three prominent people tainted by scandal, former Miss America Bess Myerson, Marv Albert and Chicago congressman Mel Reynolds. And South Park (10 p.m., Comedy Central) reruns the Christmas episode where Jewish Kyle, who feels like an outcast, is visited by jolly Mr. Hankey, "The Christmas Poo."

S P E C I A L S

The Muppet Christmas Carol (7 p.m., Disney Channel) stars Michael Caine as Scrooge. The two-hour retrospective Behind the Laughs (8 p.m., Fox) looks back at classic sitcoms, through clips, trivia questions and interviews with creators and stars. Yes, it's a rerun.
