SALON'S TV PICKS FOR
THURSDAY, JAN. 7, 1999
BY JOYCE MILLMAN

S P E C I A L S

ABC, CNN and the Fox News Channel will offer live coverage of President Clinton's impeachment trial in the Senate, which begins today. Regular prime-time programming on broadcast and cable networks may be preempted by news specials about the day's developments.

S E R I E S

On Friends (8 p.m., NBC), Rachel's New Year's resolution to stop gossiping is tested by her discovery that Monica and Chandler are a couple. The romantic comedy-drama Cupid (9 p.m., ABC), little-seen in its Saturday time slot, moves to Thursdays, and if you've lost patience with quaint "Frasier" and lame "Veronica's Closet," you ought to give it a try. Jeremy Piven plays a psych patient who claims to be the Roman god of love; Paula Marshall is the cerebral "relationship expert" who takes him in as a research subject. ER (10 p.m., NBC) goes off the deep end with an episode in which the wacko new E.R. chief, Dr. Amanda Lee (guest Mare Winningham), takes her obsession with Greene to an extreme. 48 Hours (10 p.m., CBS) has a scheduled report on relatives of Michigan murder victims who are trying to prevent a serial killer from being paroled.
