SALON'S TV PICKS FOR
THURSDAY, JAN. 21, 1999
BY JOYCE MILLMAN

S E R I E S

Monica sees a different side of Chandler on a new episode of Friends (8 p.m., NBC). The new drama series Turks (9 p.m., CBS) premieres. How's this for formulaic? William Devane (familiar face, older-viewer appeal) plays a tough Chicago cop (action, danger) with two sons (generic hunks No. 1 and 2) who are also cops, and a third son (generic hunk No. 3) who's rebelling against Dad by not being a cop (compelling family tension). Whatever (boredom). On a rerun of Cupid (9 p.m., ABC), Trevor tries to make a match, unaware that one of his intendeds is dying. ER (10 p.m., NBC) begins setting up George Clooney's departure with a new episode in which Doug lands in trouble (again) when he goes against orders and treats a child in pain. Also, Greene gets an offer from NASA.

S P E C I A L S

The Godfather, Part II (9 p.m., USA), the Academy Award-winning 1974 sequel, alternates the rise of Vito Corleone (Robert De Niro) with the fall of Michael (Al Pacino). Also starring Diane Keaton, Robert Duvall and Lee Strasberg. Conclusion airs Friday.
