The Shawshank Redemption (8 p.m., CBS), the Academy Award-nominated 1994 adaptation of Stephen King's short story, has its network TV premiere. Tim Robbins stars as a wrongly convicted prison lifer who refuses to lose hope in regaining his freedom. Also starring Morgan Freeman. Tammy Wynette Remembered (9 p.m., Nashville Network) pays tribute to the late "First Lady of Country Music," with performances and commentary by George Jones, Wynonna, Melissa Etheridge, Lorrie Morgan, Tanya Tucker, Elton John and others.
The X-Files: Complete Conspiracy Marathon (8 p.m. & 11, FX) continues with Episode 29, "Duane Barry" (8 p.m.), in which a former FBI agent who claims to have been an alien abductee takes several hostages at a travel agency. Significant points: This is the episode with the famous scene of Mulder in his Speedo bathing suit. Episode 30, "Ascension" (11 p.m.) continues the Duane Barry story, with Mulder racing to a mountaintop to retrieve Scully, whom Barry has kidnapped and is intending to sacrifice to the returning aliens. Significant points: Krycek's true colors are revealed for the first time; a shot of the very pregnant Gillian Anderson on an alien operating table is used to indicate the apparent alien-impregnation of Scully. On King of the Hill (8 p.m., Fox), Hank is mortified when Bobby chooses to play soccer instead of football. Xander hangs out with a bad crowd while Buffy and the gang try to stop the reopening of the Hellmouth on Buffy the Vampire Slayer (8 p.m., WB). Thurgood makes a lousy nurse when Muriel gets sick on The PJs (8:30 p.m., Fox). Frontline (check local times, PBS) presents "The Triumph of Evil," an examination of the unwillingness of the United States and the United Nations to respond to the 1993 genocide in Rwanda. On Felicity (9 p.m., WB), Miss Golden Globe Winning Thang struggles to curb her buttinsky impulse when she spies Blair kissing Elena's best friend. Also, Julie finds her birth mother (guest Jane Kaczmarek). The Inside Story (9 p.m. EST/10 PST, A&E) report, "Fights like a Girl," takes a look at female boxers. A rerun of NYPD Blue (10 p.m., ABC) from the Smits Era has Sipowicz and Simone investigating the murder of stripper roommates. Jim Carrey is profiled in pictures and music on BIOrhythm (10:30 p.m., MTV).
