SALON'S TV PICKS FOR
MONDAY, MARCH 8, 1999
BY JOYCE MILLMAN

S P E C I A L S

Teens: What Makes Them Tick (9 p.m., ABC) is the subject of John Stossel's latest ABC News special, or maybe it's an ABC News special from 1982 or 1975 or 1968 or 1957. Oh, for crying out loud, leave the kids alone already. The new cable movie Invisible Child (9 p.m., Lifetime) stars Rita Wilson (otherwise known as Mrs. Tom Hanks) and Victor Garber as an otherwise normal couple who insist that they have three children, except one of them is imaginary. The documentary Dare to Compete: The Struggle of Women in Sports (10 p.m., HBO) chronicles the history of female athletes and the ongoing fight to win the same opportunities as male athletes.

S E R I E S

In case you missed it the first time, the pilot episode of Dilbert (8 p.m., UPN) is having another showing. On the new reality series Red Handed (8:30 p.m., UPN), people are goaded into indulging their vices for the benefit of voyeurs -- oops, make that viewers -- at home. Adam Carolla hosts. Ally McBeal (9 p.m., FOX) reruns the one where Rob Schneider guests as a would-be suitor whom Ally can't stand, but can't reject either. A rerun of Law & Order (9 p.m., NBC) escapes from its usual Wednesday berth to challenge "Ally McBeal." The case involves the tangled relationship between a murdered professional escort, a young stud and the two older women who love him. On a rerun of Everybody Loves Raymond (9 p.m., CBS), Debra wishes her unmotherly mom (Katherine Helmond) were more like Marie. Dateline NBC (10 p.m., NBC) looks back at the murder of Gianni Versace by fugitive Andrew Cunanan. The new sci-fi series Strange World (10 p.m., ABC) has a preview showing before it settles into the "NYPD Blue" slot Tuesday for a brief run. Created by former "X-Files" writer Howard Gordon, this is a murky conspiracy drama about a former Army scientist (Tim Guinee) suffering from Gulf War syndrome who investigates "criminal abuses of science." Michael Moriarty and Kristin Lehman co-star.
