Have you ever watched a really depressing documentary because some reviewer called it a "devastating but ultimately hopeful story" or some such? Well, the HBO documentary "To Die in Jerusalem" (premieres 9 p.m. EDT) is heartbreaking and provocative, but like the Israeli-Palestinian conflict itself, it's not in the least bit hopeful. The documentary explores the deaths of two teenage girls -- 17-year-old Israeli Rachel Levy and her murderer, 18-year-old Palestinian suicide bomber Ayat al-Akhras. Levy's mother, Avigail Levy, wants to meet the mother of her daughter's killer face to face, but several attempts are made and thwarted. When the two finally do get a chance to talk, the discussion is so passionate and frustrating for both sides, it's hard to watch. Even so, "To Die in Jerusalem" affords an intensely personal and fascinating glimpse of the misunderstandings and challenges at the heart of this enduring conflict.
