_______________BIBI THE BUNGLER BY JONATHAN BRODER (10/9/97)
I enjoyed your coverage of Benjamin Netanyahu's botched assassination plot against a Hamas leader. However, your reporter failed to cover the way this has played in Canada, from which two citizens' passports were stolen or forged for the caper.

I suppose it's natural to be U.S.-centered at Salon, especially since Israel today looks more and more like an overgrown borough of New York City. However, there's a major flap underway in Canada, and it affects the future of Israel. Canadian officials are mad as hell about the caper, and so are many people in Canada.

What is Canada to Israel? Just about the most reliable source of funding it has ever had. In fact, Canadian Jews contribute more money to Israel per capita than any similar diaspora population, and always have, since the inception of the state. One can argue that the loss of Canadian support would be far more serious to Israel than the loss of anything King Hussein can provide.

So there it is. Much less melodramatic, perhaps, but a vital part of the story nonetheless.
