Salon is to be commended for its remarkably even-handed coverage of the Clinton-Lewinsky imbroglio and its diligent delving into the unmistakably partisan roots of Kenneth Starr's campaign against the president. While the mainstream media apparently depend on illegal leaks from the independent counsel's office for their headlines, Salon has done some good, solid reporting that expands this story beyond titillating but pointless questions about whether the president engaged in consensual sex with a former White House intern. But it's time for all of these investigations -- Whitewater, Filegate, Lewinsky -- to be put to an end. They serve only the interests of Republicans and other conservatives who hope desperately to damage Clinton's ability to govern and sink Al Gore's hopes of occupying the Oval Office in 2001. After spending over 30 million of our tax dollars, Starr is no closer than he was four years ago to proving that Clinton betrayed the public trust, as Nixon and Reagan did before him. All that Starr has achieved is to make it harder for an activist, fair-minded president to do his job and helped to lower the standards of American political journalism to something approaching National Enquirer level. If there was any justice in this world, President Clinton would receive an additional, complimentary four-year term in office as recompense for all the unjust abuse he has suffered since 1992 at the hands of conservative hatemongers and an increasingly lazy, negligent national press. -- J. I believe that Starr's entire investigation is about that "uppity woman," Hillary Clinton. Those right-wingers went after her with a vengeance. They couldn't find anything on her in Whitewater; they couldn't find anything on her in her cattle futures windfall and they couldn't find anything on her regarding the Rose Law Firm billing records. Even though she agreed to cooperate fully in the investigation, they put out a subpoena of the first lady of the United States of America. What an insult! This woman has brought to bear all the power she has in order to show them to be the twerps they are. What on earth made them think that they could get away with such insulting, demeaning behavior? Because she's a woman? You go girl! I hope you take them all down! -- Judith Krain
