_______________ETHICS OF THE CROSS HAIRS BY ANDREW LEONARD (01/012/99)

I found Andrew Leonard's review of Trophy Buck very interesting. The first half of the review, however, was quite negative and narrow-minded with regards to the "mess of deer hunters in the United States -- as many as 12 million." Most of the 12 million people who enjoy the out of doors and the traditions that come with this way of life are respectful, responsible citizens and amateur naturalists. Many of the traditions of a sportsmen or hunters involve naturalistic ideology. We truly care about the animal kingdom, and not to simply prolong our "sport." Most of us subscribe to the belief that our rite contributes to the overall health and welfare of that species: preventing overpopulation and subsequent disease as well as providing for our families. No true hunter would ever contribute to the demise of a species. We truly care about our environment, spending an above average amount of time studying it and more importantly being a part of it.

Hunting truly is much more involved than simply picking up a gun and throwing it into the back of a pickup truck. For the tools that we use, firearm safety is paramount! A hunter truly would be scolded for improperly discharging a weapon into the dirt as portrayed in "Trophy Buck." As with a horse or a plow, the tools used for harvesting must be used safely, properly and with respect. I just wanted to say that a hunter is not a wild redneck running around shooting everything in sight. Those people do exist, unfortunately, but they are criminals and nothing less. They probably would be more inclined to play Starcraft.

So Andrew Leonard likes blasting aliens, but not deer. Having been on a couple deer hunts (I didn't get any), I rather enjoy deer hunting simulations, because they bring back real memories of scrunching through snow, peeking around trees -- all the sounds and sights of real deer hunting. Now if only they could simulate all those wonderful smells as well.

_______________ASK CAMILLE: TRAGICOMIC CLINTON DESERVES CENSURE, NOT IMPEACHMENT BY CAMILLE PAGLIA (01/06/99)

So Camille Paglia thinks that the weaselly chickenshit pro-impeachment "House GOP moderates" are the real heroes of this crisis? Since when is knuckling under to Tom DeLay and the Christian right heroic?

Paglia forgets or chooses not to address the fact that these "moderates" were being threatened with having their primary endorsements stripped from them, their funding cut and having to face even more conservative competition for the votes of the GOP primary voters, who are a notoriously bigoted lot (or is it Lott?).
