Oct. 28, 2005 | Broadsheet is so into Cockpit, the Observer's new men-only blog, that we couldn't help thinking about it as we were reading Maureen Dowd's forthcoming book, "Are Men Necessary?" in which she recaps a story from earlier this summer about a matriarchal community established by three dozen Kenyan women who'd been raped and subsequently abandoned.
"Their all female community flourished, with the women running a cultural center and camping site for tourists visiting the nearby Sambru National Reserve," writes Dowd. "In a fit of pique, the men in their tribe started a rival village of men, and also tried to build a cultural and tourist center, but were not successful and soon unraveled."
