New York Stories
the first time I visited New York I had two experiences that have encapsulated it for me: 1) When I returned to my hotel, there was a big commotion outside the main entrance. An ambulance had pulled up in the circle and the paramedics were attempting to bring out a poshly dressed woman on a stretcher. All class distinctions broke down. It was equal-opportunity gawking. Men in thousand-dollar suits, women in furs, punks in leather and ragged panhandlers all crowding together for a look -- and blocking the ambulance so the stretcher couldn't get through. Meanwhile the cabbies were stacked up, hanging out of their windows and (although they could see perfectly well what was going on) laying on their horns. 2) Being a small-town midwesterner, I was overwhelmed by the masses of people and the pace. I was at a party down in the Village one night and I asked a guy how he coped with living in the city. He answered, without a pause, "I never go north of 10th street." Marv Foster |
Does your neighborhood still feel like home?
my brother-in-law used to own a service station at Hollywood and Vermont in the 60s and back then I always felt that when you were heading east on Hollywood and you arrived at Vermont - you were somehow safe; safe from the panhandling hippies and assorted weirdos that line Hollywood Boulevard. Now when I drive through basically the same area the safe zone seems more like the Hillhurst/Vermont area. That entire stretch of Vermont from Hollywood Blvd. south now gives me the creeps. I was in L.A. when the Rodney King trial verdict was reached and I watched people seemingly appear out of the woodwork and start looting and burning. It was mass chaos and it seemed to be coming from all directions. Too bad. I traveled those streets from 1946 and I remember how I felt so glad to be in such a beautiful and exciting place. It seems like the the heart and soul of Los Angeles has to keep moving away from the center just to stay alive. Dottie Munns |
My private wanderlust
when I was growing up in the Northeast of England, my biggest ambition was to go to LONDON, it always seemed such a magical place. I realized that dream at the age of 12 and it was every bit as exciting as I imagined it to be, but of course, after that I wanted to see more and more. When I was 20 I took advantage of a chance to visit New Zealand, traveling both ways by sea with stops in Curacao, Panama and Tahiti outward bound and Brisbane, Singapore, Colombo, Cairo and Naples homeward bound. The whole 2-year journey was a totally fantastic experience though I left my heart in New Zealand. Shortly after my return, I joined two friends from New Zealand for an 8-week, 6-country camping trip in Europe, but of course 8 weeks wasn't nearly long enough. Living in England I knew I'd have plenty of opportunities to travel in Europe, but then I got married and moved to the U.S. and my traveling days are sadly limited. I still have the wanderlust though and one of these days.... Bookmark Readers' Tips and Tales Issue No. 7 | 6 | 5 | 4 | 3 |
