Quote of the day

Generally, with Broadsheet's quote of the day, I'd like to give you a gem of wisdom or a feisty maxim to forward to friends. But today I bring you a quote of shame, via Feministing. This week, Justice John Rooke of Calgary, Alberta, sentenced a 30-year-old man to three and a half years in prison for raping an 18-year-old girl. The attacker found the girl on the side of the road, where she asked for directions to a local bus stop. He offered to give her a ride, she accepted, and then he used the excuse of needing gas to eventually drive her to a cemetery, where he raped her. During sentencing, Rooke called the attacker a "vulture" and someone with "indignity [toward the victim] and the people buried in the cemetery," but saved these words for the victim:

"It's the stupid people who need protection."
