This morning, the ever-unpredictable Jane Fonda goosed sleepy-eyed "Today" show audiences with her oh-so-casual dropping of the word "cunt." Jezebel has the video, and of course, Eve Ensler was involved. The "Today" show was quick to apologize for the remark. Apparently, Fonda thought she was on "The Colbert Report" again.

Fonda and Ensler were on "Today" to promote the 10th anniversary of Ye Olde "Vagina Monologues" and its campaign to end violence against women, what Ensler calls "femicide." The celebration will involve a big performance with Oprah, Salma, La Fonda et al. in New Orleans on April 12, an event that will transform the Superdome into a giant vagina, according to press materials (and my dreams!). I, for one, can't wait till Al Roker broadcasts live from the clitoris.

All the focus on the appearance this morning will inevitably center on the C-word -- was it offensive? are we overreacting? is Fonda unhinged or bravely uncensored? -- but I'd also like to take a moment to enjoy this evocative snippet of the conversation:

"New Orleans is the vagina of America," said Ensler. To which Fonda replied, "Yes. It's moist, it's a wetland, it's a place where people come for fun. And when things go south, forget about it."
