"WTF" of the day

The headline says it all, really. What else is there to say in response to reports of a man in Greenfield, Calif., allegedly agreeing to sell his 14-year-old daughter into marriage for booze, soft drinks and meat. Or to be specific:

  • 150 cases of soda
  • 150 cases of beer
  • two cases of wine
  • 50 cases of Gatorade
  • several cases of meat
  • $16,000 in cash

This grocery list of items was reportedly promised by 18-year-old Margarito de Jesus Galindo to the father, Marcelino De Jesus Martinez, in exchange for his daugher's hand in marriage. The father then handed his daughter over and the two lived together for a week. But the father, unhappy that he hadn't received the full payment, called the police to report his daughter missing. "He wanted us to pick up his daughter because the deal had been finalized, but the remuneration was missing," explains police chief Joe Grebmeier.

But, whoops, that just landed them both in jail! The father is charged with receiving money for placing a person into cohabitation, and the 18-year-old is charged with statutory rape, reports MSNBC. And I'll never be able to look at the beverage aisle the same way again.
