Opponents of same-sex marriage have a shiny new spokesperson: Miss California, Carrie Prejean. As you might recall, the beauty queen sparked anger last week by announcing her opposition to same-sex marriage during the Miss USA pageant, which she later claimed cost her the crown. "Queen of all media" Perez Hilton unfortunately responded in typical fashion with a video blog calling her a "dumb bitch." Now, the National Organization for Marriage has released an ad attacking gay marriage advocates for, uh, attacking anti-gay marriage advocates. (You'll find the video below.)
The spot opens with footage of Prejean's statement about same-sex unions, accompanied by a voice-over: "When asked a question about same sex marriage, a young contestant answers." Then we're shown the bright-eyed beauty queen offering her "no offense, but" line about opposing gay marriage. "She is immediately attacked," the narrator intones. Cue: Perez Hilton mouthing off and Human Rights Campaign president Joe Solmonese declaring that "it's no longer palatable in this country to be an outright bigot."
The ad exasperatedly exclaims that "when a 'pro-marriage' group expresses concerns about how same sex marriage will impact religious groups they're called liars and bigots." You know, funnily enough, the same thing happened to folks who tried to limit the rights of certain racial groups based on personal and religious beliefs. I guess discrimination is cool, but calling out bigotry? Now that's just mean.
The ad concludes by claiming that gay marriage advocates aren't willing to debate the "consequences of same sex marriage." But as Solmonese said in a brilliant response to the ad: "The only terrible consequence of marriage equality they’ve demonstrated so far is a gay blogger disagreeing with a beauty queen."
