Like many journalists, I am a sucker for cheesy puns and plays on words, but this Reuters story on a magazine's poll that found that the average American woman has 19 pairs of shoes takes such wordplay to a new low.

I quote: "Shoe guru Meghan Cleary, who hosts a show 'Shoe Therapy' on TV shopping channel HSN, said women's love of shoes was nothing new but women had now come out of the closet with their obsession, encouraged by TV shows like 'Sex and the City' where the women speak openly about their love for their shoes."

Get it? Come out of the closet! The shoes, they live in closets! Like our love for them has -- until now. But, hallelujah, we're free! Free at last!
