Alberto Gonzales just stepped before the TV cameras to announce that he has decided to "conclude his government service" effective Sept. 17.
The attorney general didn't say why he's resigning, and he referred only obliquely to the scandals that have surrounded him over the course of the past year. "Even my worst days as attorney general have been better than my father's best days," Gonzales said.
The attorney general said that public service is an honorable pursuit, that he appreciates the opportunity George W. Bush gave him, and that he admires the work the men and women of the Justice Department do in keeping America safe.
"Thank you, and God bless America," Gonzales said. Then he walked away from the microphone, ignoring the questions reporters shouted as he left.
