SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Some people are taking body piercing and tattoos to a new level, by getting their tongues split in half. The result is a forked tongue like a snake's.
But folks in Illinois who want to look a little more reptilian could find that more difficult now. The governor has signed a law that restricts the practice of tongue-splitting.
The legislation bars anyone but doctors and dentists from performing the procedure. Offenders could face up to a year in jail.
Supporters of the measure predict few professionals will perform tongue-splitting. They say the practice is dangerous and could lead to infection.
