On Oct. 28, more than 400 historians, including some of the most eminent figures in the field, posted a statement on the Internet deploring the attempt to impeach President Clinton. The statement, co-sponsored by Arthur Schlesinger Jr., C. Vann Woodward and Sean Wilentz, and titled "Historians in Defense of the Constitution," argued that Clinton's actions "depart from what the Framers saw as grounds for impeachment." Characterizing the drive as "unprecedented in our history" and as having "extremely ominous" implications for the future, the signatories urged Americans of all political affiliations to "oppose the dangerous new theory of impeachment." The signatories include Taylor Branch, Alan Brinkley, Harold Evans, John Hope Franklin, George M. Frederickson, Henry Louis Gates Jr., Doris Kearns Goodwin, John Judis, Michael Kazin, Edmund Morgan, Geoffrey Ward and Garry Wills.
