Quote of the day

Back in 1991, John McCain offered a prescient take on his involvement in the Keating Five scandal.

Oct. 07, 2008 | As Alex reported yesterday, the Obama campaign is now attacking John McCain over his involvement in the Keating Five scandal. Courtesy of a 1991 New York Times article, this was how McCain assessed the impact of the scandal on his political career at the time the case made headlines:

In Phoenix, Senator John McCain, the only Republican among the five, began his own damage control effort by announcing that he would give up $112,000 in contributions from Mr. Keating or his associates, turning them over to the Federal Government. But he conceded at a news conference: "I'm sure that my political obituary will always have something about the Keating Five in it. I don't see how that could be avoided."
