FRESNO, Calif. (AP) -- Rep. Gary Condit fell nearly 500 signatures short of what he needed to waive ballot fees and will have to pay to run for the first time in his career.
In a campaign estimated to cost more than $1 million, the $221 Condit owes is spare change, but it shows how his support has eroded in an area known as "Condit Country."
Condit has never before had a problem getting the required 3,000 signatures to avoid the $1,451 fee to get his name on the ballot.
On Wednesday, the tally from election clerks totaled 2,543 signatures.
The Democratic congressman's popularity plummeted when speculation about his affair with missing federal intern Chandra Levy dominated national headlines in the summer.
