Bush readies for month-long vacation

WASHINGTON -- President Bush looked to sharpen his golf game Sunday in advance of a long weekend in Maine, where he typically hits the links with his famously competitive father.

For the second day in a row, Bush was heading to the golf course, undaunted by a forecast of a 99 degree high and heavy humidity. Bush also golfed Saturday with three Republican House members.

"I'm just trying to get out of the house," the president said. His playing partners Sunday were a club pro and a couple of White House aides.

Bush starts a month-long vacation Friday in Kennebunkport, Maine, returning to Washington briefly for his annual physical examination before going to his Texas ranch.

Also Sunday, Bush attended St. John's Church near the White House, and jogged at Fort McNair in Washington.

He also called fellow Texan Lance Armstrong, who won his fourth straight Tour de France, catching Armstrong just after he had crossed the finish line in Paris.

"I told him we're really proud of him," Bush said. "He's an extraordinary athlete and an extraordinary man.

"He's really a sportsman," Armstrong told well-wishers in Paris.

"He said, 'Come, come with me to the White House,"' Armstrong said in French. "He's really a good guy, a fellow Texan."
