GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. (AP -- About 300 people rallied outside KARE-TV studios to protest the station's decision to air Dr. Laura Schlessinger's upcoming television show.
The protesters Sunday vowed to boycott businesses that advertise during the Paramount-syndicated show, which will begin airing on KARE Sept. 11.
Gay rights activists have criticized the radio talk-show host for her views on homosexuality, which she has called "deviant" and a "biological error."
"This sort of message, which is about so many things, but in particular about homophobia, continues to foster the kind of behavior that allows hate crimes," said Tom Kane, a member of the Episcopal Diocese of Minnesota's Department of Outreach and Advocacy.
KARE officials said the station purchased the show for its fall lineup before learning about Schlessinger's controversial views. But they said the station will honor its contract.
"Silencing voices of any kind prior to seeing even a single frame of tape, raises a whole other set of potentially harmful issues regarding freedom of expression," KARE general manager John Remes said in a statement.
