Arthur C. Clarke to announce screenplay Oscar

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka -- Sci-fi writer Arthur C. Clarke will announce on video the nominees and winner for best screenplay at this year's Academy Awards, according to the government of Sri Lanka's Web site.

But that doesn't mean he knows who won the Oscar.

"I had to record five video clips presenting each nominee as the winner," the Web site quoted Clarke as saying. "I hope they'll play the right one that night."

Clarke, 83, has post-polio syndrome and is unable to travel to Los Angeles for Sunday night's awards show. His presentation was filmed at his Colombo home earlier this month, the Web site said.

Clarke and Stanley Kubrick shared an Oscar nomination for best screenplay for the 1968 film "200l: A Space Odyssey."

The nominees for best screenplay (written based on material previously produced or published) are: Robert Nelson Jacobs, "Chocolat"; Wang Hui Ling, James Schamus and Tsai Kuo Jung, "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon"; Ethan Coen & Joel Coen, "O Brother, Where Art Thou?"; Stephen Gaghan, "Traffic"; Steve Kloves, "Wonder Boys."
