A "loss of will" and capitulation "to the worst elements in our culture"

When do people realize that they've become parodies of themselves?

It's a question William A. Donahue, the president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, might want to ponder this morning. Donahue is quoted in this morning's Washington Post as saying: "This clearly demonstrates that the Bush administration has suffered a loss of will and that they have capitulated to the worst elements in our culture."

The "this" in question? The White House Christmas card, which includes a passage from the Old Testament but doesn't mention the word "Christmas."

Donahue is outraged, and he isn't alone. Joseph Farah, who edits WorldNetDaily, rants that Bush "claims to be a born-again, evangelical Christian" but "sure doesn't act like one." Farah said he threw out his White House card as soon as he got it.

Just wait until he hears this. Yesterday afternoon, First Lady Laura Bush popped into Pottery Barn in Georgetown, where she was overheard telling shoppers, "Happy holidays."

  • Will the GOP's negativity produce a backlash?

Democrats like to tell themselves that Americans dislike the character attacks in which the GOP specializes. But that comforting thought is untrue.
