A picture is worth a thousand words. Too bad they're in Turkish

Boasting of peace in Baghdad, a GOP candidate cites evidence from ... Istanbul?

Howard Kaloogian, a Republican running for Randy Cunningham's House seat in California, wants Americans to know that things are going well in Iraq, and he's got a picture to prove it: A snapshot of a couple walking hand-in-hand down a Baghdad street that he posted on his campaign Web site. "We took this photo of downtown Baghdad while we were in Iraq," the caption says. "Iraq (including Baghdad) is much more calm and stable than what many people believe it to be. But, each day the news media finds any violence occurring in the country and screams and shouts about it -- in part because many journalists are opposed to the U.S. effort to fight terrorism."

There's just one catch: The photo was taken in Turkey, not Iraq.

Josh Marshall has the evidence up at Talking Points Memo and is crowing -- deservedly so -- about the wonders of "collaborative journalism." We're wondering what Mr. Kaloogian has to say on the subject.

Update: We needn't wonder any longer: Kaloogian says that, if there's a problem with the picture, it's all his webmaster's fault.
