John McCain's "ifs"

Gen. David Petraeus may not be the only one due for an "assessment" in September: Citing the word of "Republican insiders," the Sunday Times of London says John McCain could bail out of the presidential race in September "if his fundraising dries up and his poll ratings continue to drop."

Of course, with those "ifs" included, the same could be said about just about any candidate from either party.

Dan Schnur, who was McCain's communications director during the 2000 campaign, said a series of obstacles stand between the Arizona senator and the 2008 Republican presidential nomination. The biggest among them, Schnur says, is his support for an immigration reform deal that many on the right consider an offer of "amnesty" for illegal aliens.
