Report: Rumsfeld quit before 2006 elections

A lot of Republicans probably wish the White House had revealed the news then.

When George W. Bush announced Donald Rumsfeld's resignation right after the 2006 midterm elections, we wondered if Republicans might have fared better at the polls if the secretary of defense had quit just a little earlier. It turns out he did: As Reuters reports, Rumsfeld's resignation letter was dated Nov. 6 -- the day before voters handed the Democrats control of both the House and the Senate.
