War Room

Do you have to leave so soon?

Today is the last day on the job for both White House press secretary Tony Snow and Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

Snow, appearing this morning on "Fox & Friends" -- and if there's a more appropriate name for a TV show, we haven't thought of it yet -- said that working at the White House has been a "glittering, wonderful temporary assignment" and that he's going to take Helen Thomas to lunch at some point after it's done.

Gonzales? During a brief press conference in Des Moines, Iowa, Thursday, he summed up his tenure as the nation's top law enforcement officer this way: "We're all human and all of us make mistakes, and the thing that's important is to identify when those mistakes are made, acknowledge the mistakes, correct the mistakes and then you move on. So, you know, that's what I've endeavored to do as the attorney general."

  • Will the GOP's negativity produce a backlash?

Democrats like to tell themselves that Americans dislike the character attacks in which the GOP specializes. But that comforting thought is untrue.
