For Nebraska's Nelson, Mukasey is the trifecta

Congratulations, Cornhuskers!

By our count, Nebraska Sen. Ben Nelson is the only Democrat to have voted to confirm all three of George W. Bush's attorney general nominees: John Ashcroft in 2001, Alberto Gonzales in 2005 and Michael Mukasey last night.

Nelson voted to confirm John G. Roberts and Samuel Alito, too.

That's a record even Democrat-turned-independent Joe Lieberman can't match: He voted for Gonzales, Mukasey and Roberts but against Ashcroft and Alito.

Maybe Nelson deserves some credit for consistency. Democratic Sens. Bill Nelson, Mark Pryor and Ken Salazar, all of whom voted against Mukasey, voted in 2005 to confirm Gonzales, a man who also dodged questions about torture during his confirmation hearing without showing either the legal knowledge or the patina of independence Mukasey displayed during his.
