The news networks have just called New Hampshire for John McCain, the Republican candidate whose campaign was all but left for dead over the summer.

The Atlantic's Marc Ambinder says exit polls show that 33 percent of those voting in the Republican primary were independents, and that the independents favored McCain over Mitt Romney by 12 percentage points.

The same exit polls showed that Barack Obama is the favorite of nearly 50 percent of the independents voting in the Democratic primary.

In terms of actual votes, 12 percent of the precincts have now reported, and Hillary Clinton is holding a 38 percent to 36 percent lead over Obama.

Among Republicans, McCain is up by 11 points over Romney, with Huckabee leading a pack of contenders way behind the two front-runners.
