Former President Bush to endorse McCain

According to reports from several media organizations, former President George H.W. Bush will endorse John McCain at a press conference in Houston on Monday.

Speaking at a rally Friday in Oshkosh, Wis., McCain would not confirm that the elder Bush would endorse him. But his campaign did send out a release announcing the press conference, and when he was asked about the possibility he'd be getting the endorsement, the Arizona senator responded, "I hope so, because former President Bush is one of the more respected -- most respected -- people in our party. He is certainly, maybe the finest gentleman in our party in the view of one and all. He's a great man, a great American hero going all the way back to World War II, so I'd be honored to be in his company at any time."

The current President Bush has not officially endorsed McCain, but in an interview on Fox News this past Sunday, he did call McCain "a true conservative," something important for a Republican base that's still decidedly wary of its presumptive nominee.
