Both Dem campaigns deny CNN's talks story

It appears the CNN story, referenced earlier, that the Clinton and Obama campaigns have entered formal talks to end the Democratic race may be false. Both camps have now denied the story, and Salon can report that inside the network's Washington bureau, some CNN staff today have been discussing fears that Suzanne Malveaux, the reporter who broke the story, far overstated the case.

Talking Points Memo's Greg Sargent heard from spokesmen for both campaigns earlier Friday. In an e-mail, Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson said:

1) There have been no discussions with the Obama campaign

2) The only scenario being discussed by this campaign is Senator Clinton's nomination as President

3) The report is 100% false

Bill Burton, an Obama spokesman, then told Sargent, "This is something that I agree with Howard on 100%."

Later, Hillary Clinton herself denied the report, and implied that it might have come from the Obama campaign. "That's flatly untrue -- flatly, completely untrue," Clinton said when asked about the story. "This is part of an ongoing effort to end this before it's over ... I would look to the camp of my opponent for the source of those stories."
