MSNBC's Chris Matthews has long been rumored to have an eye on Republican Sen. Arlen Specter's seat in Matthews' home state of Pennsylvania. But a new Los Angeles Times report suggests the story has gone past rumor.

In Wednesday's Times, Josh Drobnyk reports that "this week [Matthews] sat down with state Democrats to discuss the prospect of taking on the five-term GOP senator."

As Politico's Michael Calderone notes, Matthews' contract with his network only goes through June 2009. Specter is up for re-election in 2010.
