Salon Announces New Publishing Team

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, DECEMBER 16, 1996 | SALON Internet, Inc., the acclaimed Internet-based magazine which was just named "Best Web Site of the Year" by Time magazine, announced today the selection of two key executives, Michael O'Donnell as President and Publisher and Darlene Townsend as Associate Publisher.

"As we enter our second year, we're excited to have our new business and publishing group in place, led by Michael O'Donnell, who brings SALON years of valuable experience building sales, marketing, and business development organizations," said David Talbot, SALON's Editor and CEO. "We've built a unique editorial product that's been well received by readers and the press. Now we're focusing our efforts on marketing SALON to reach additional customers and advertising partners."

O'Donnell, 32, comes out of the consumer software industry, where he helped introduce over 150 entertainment and educational titles to such leading national retailers as WalMart, CompUSA, Sears, Egghead, Toys R Us and Ingram. Before joining SALON, O'Donnell was Vice President of Worldwide Sales at Rocket Science Games from May, 1995 until August, 1996 and later at SegaSoft (which acquired Rocket Science's products and sales and marketing organziation in August, 1996). At Rocket Science, O'Donnell established sales distribution channels and negotiated business agreements in the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia and Australia.

Prior to joining Rocket Science Games, O'Donnell was Vice President of Retail Sales and Director of Retail Sales for Mindscape, Inc, the Novato, California software company, where he was responsible for building the company's sales and merchandising organization. Prior to his Mindscape tenure, O'Donnell was Director of Sales and Marketing at Softkey Software Products in Boca Raton, Florida, and the National Sales Manager at GeoWorks, Inc., the Alameda, California-based software technology company. O'Donnell is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley.

Darlene Townsend, 46, SALON's new Associate Publisher, was recently the National Sales Manager for San Francisco Focus, one of the leading city magazines in the country. At San Francisco Focus, Townsend was responsible for managing all national sales and sponsorships, including major advertising contracts with American Express, Stolichnaya, Absolut, AT&T, Cartier, Chanel, and United Airlines.

"The addition of Darlene Townsend as SALON's Associate Publisher will help us further develop relationships with the leading consumer advertisers, who are expected to migrate significantly to the Internet in the coming months," said Talbot. Business Week magazine recently predicted that Web advertising will escalate dramatically over the next three years, reaching $5 billion by the year 2000, from $312 million in 1996.

Before moving into publishing, Townsend was a high school teacher, teaching business, English, creative writing and world literature. She is a graduate of the University of Santa Clara.

In addition to the accolades from Time, SALON has been singled out for praise by The New York Times magazine, The New Yorker and The Wall Street Journal among others. In October, 1996, SALON received the "Cool Web Designers of the Year" award from InfiNet and People Magazine.

SALON was founded in November, 1995 by former San Francisco Examiner Arts and Features Editor David Talbot and received its initial seed financing from Adobe Systems, Hambrecht & Quist, and Apple Computer.
