Salon Adds Aol And Six New Distribution Partners To Distribute Content Across The Web

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, OCTOBER 22, 1997 | Salon Magazine, one of the leading sites on the Internet has formed major distribution alliances with America Online, four of the Web's content aggregators and with WebTVTM Network. Under these separate agreements, Salon is providing unique editorial content in the form of headlines, feature stories, interviews, book and music reviews, travel, technology and parenting.

Salon's newly developed partnerships provide access to a larger Internet audience through a collection of online services, browsers, push technology, television-based Internet access and e-commerce partners. Salon content will now be distributed in a variety of fashions through AOL, CNET, Netscape Communications Corporation, Desktop News, WebTVTM and Match.com. Salon will also have a channel on the PointCast Business Network Connections super channel.

"Salon's editorial offering has grown over the last six months to include popular departments such as technology (21st), travel (Wanderlust), television (Blue Glow) and parenting (Mothers Who Think)," said Michael O'Donnell, Salon's President and Publisher. "Our partners recognize the value of providing Salon's unique editorial voice to their audience."

"Salon's circulation has grown steadily over the last 12 months outpacing industry averages. These new distribution agreements should accelerate Salon's growth exponentially," added O'Donnell.

Salon's agreement with AOL will give AOL's more than 9 million members access to many of the best features of Salon Magazine on the Web. Salon's articles and commentary will be prominently featured in AOL's new Influence Channel, the Internet and online world's central source for news, gossip, and profiles about powerful people, the arts, business, upscale living, fashion and more. A "high-end" channel for a mass media audience, AOL's Influence channel will contain original content as well as direct links to the best of the Web.

"With its thought-provoking commentary and features, Salon Magazine is a logical choice for premier content on AOL's Influence Channel," said Jesse Kornbluth, Editorial Director of Channel Programming. "This partnership will enable AOL members to link directly and seamlessly to Salon on the Web, creating a rich, entertaining, and convenient experience for the new AOL Influence community."

Salon is also distributing content from its Mothers Who Think, Surreal Gourmet and Table Talk sections to CNET's Snap! Online.

Salon appears in the Entertainment category of the Netscape In Box Direct program and Salon's Mothers Who Think department was recently added as an offering in the Community category. As part of the Mothers Who Think launch, Salon and Netscape plan to promote a signed copy of Jamie Lee Curtis' "Tell Me Again About the Day I Was Born" when readers sign up for Mothers Who Think via In Box Direct.

Salon joins other leading content providers as a featured channel, delivering headlines as they happen via the Desktop News ticker. Desktop News, which recently released it's free 1.1 version, provides users and content providers with one of the most efficient broadcast platforms to deliver and receive content.

Salon's agreement with WebTVTM Network includes being featured in the ExploreTM section of WebTVTM Network . WebTVTM Network is dedicated to delivering entertaining new experiences and information to consumers through the integration of television programming and the Internet.

A co-branded Salon/Match.com site launched on October 1 as an outgrowth of Salon's Unzipped mating and dating in the '90s column. In addition, Match.com will be featuring Salon movie content.

Salon is an interactive magazine of books, arts, literature and ideas. Salon features original writing by respected thinkers on topics ranging from literature and entertainment to technology and politics. Salon's Table Talk reader forum is the second most popular forum on the Internet.
