America's Oddest Couple Reflect on Valentine's Day SAN FRANCISCO, CA, FEBRUARY 11, 1997 | Salon, the Internet-based magazine, in celebration of Valentine's Day presents a special interview with marital partners and political foes, James Carville and Mary Matalin on February 12, 1997. James: "People are still mystified as to how this relationship works. They hear us yelling at each other on TV and they can't figure out how we manage to share a TV studio, much less a home, a family, a life. I don't blame them for being curious. I mean, not every guy has a wife who calls him a serpenthead -- or worse -- in front of a couple of million people." Mary: "Even if we avoid most political topics, we still find plenty to argue about. But that's part of it. We're competitive. We challenge each other. My mother always told me I'd end up with someone I wouldn't always beat. She was right." Read how James and Mary make it work in "Pundits in Love." Join other readers in our Table Talk conversation area as they discuss marrying political opposites. "We've been trying to get these two together online for months," said David Talbot, Salon's Editor and CEO, "it's only fitting that they should grace our pages on Valentine's Day." James Carville is a regular contributor to Salon. Since moving to an all-daily schedule, Salon features political thought on Mondays with Carville alternating weeks with conservative polemicist David Horowitz. Salon has been rated by Time magazine as the "Best Web Site of 1996." In addition to accolades from Time, Salon has been singled out for praise by the New York Times, The New Yorker, Wired and The Wall Street Journal. Salon was founded in November 1995 by former San Francisco Examiner Arts and Features Editor, David Talbot, and received its initial seed financing from Adobe Systems, Hambrecht & Quist, and Apple Computer. - - - - - - - - - - - -
