SALON Magazine Wins Webby Award for Best Print/Zines

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, MARCH 9, 1998 | Salon Magazine was awarded its second Webby Award in the print/zines category in ceremonies held at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco on Friday, March 6.

"We're delighted to receive this award for the second consecutive year," commented SALON Editor and CEO David Talbot. "As I said at the ceremony, it confirms SALON's belief that words still matter in the brave new digital world. We'd like to thank the Webby judges for honoring SALON's commitment to journalism and literature."

In the 12 months between winning the 1997 Webby Award for best online magazine and winning this year's award, SALON has increased its audience 228 percent, it has added new editorial initiatives, including Mothers Who Think and Wanderlust (nominated for a 1998 Webby for best travel site), and its popular 21st department has moved from a weekly to a daily publishing schedule. In addition, SALON has added more than 50 new advertisers to the site in a variety of categories including automotive, technology, travel, finance, consumer products and retail. Further, SALON has welcomed new investors ASCII Ventures, L.P. and Borders Group Inc. and signed agreements with seven content distribution partners.

Since its inception in November 1995, SALON has provided readers with news, reviews, points-of-view, interviews and book excerpts. Contributing writers and columnists for SALON include Camille Paglia, Christopher Hitchens, Anne Lamott, Sallie Tisdale, David Horowitz, Sarah Vowell, Courtney Weaver and Susie Bright. Additionally, SALON has featured in-depth interviews, as well as discussions in its reader forum, Table Talk, with respected authors such as Garrison Keillor, Elizabeth McCracken, Jane Hamilton, Galway Kinnell, Joyce Carol Oates, Carol Shields, Charles Frazier, Erica Jong, Doris Lessing, Gore Vidal, Russell Banks, Haruki Murakami and dozens of others.

SALON is an interactive magazine of books, arts, travel and ideas. SALON features original writing by respected thinkers on topics ranging from literature and entertainment to technology and politics.
