Ross will also explore new business opportunities on and off the Web. "As a founding member of Salon, Andrew has been intimately involved in business strategies since the company launched. He possesses a keen understanding of both Web economics and the important role of editorial in developing meaningful partnerships," commented O'Donnell. Before coming to Salon, Ross spent 10 years at the San Francisco Examiner in senior editorial positions, including foreign and national editor. He was awarded Silver Medals by the Society of Newspaper Design for creation of "The Back Page." Prior to the Examiner, he was the assignment editor for KQED-TV, where he was awarded the Corporation for Public Broadcasting prize for producing the best public television news show of the year. Salon also named David Weir, an experienced journalist, editor and media executive to the new post of Vice President of Content and Managing Editor. Weir, former Vice President of Content for Wired Digital (Wired News, Hotwired and Suck) brings to Salon more than 27 years in content development. He will assist in Salon's continued editorial development and the implementation of the magazine's syndication business. At Wired Digital, he was responsible for the development of Reuters/Wired News Service, an editorial collaboration with one of the world's largest news agencies. Weir assisted in Salon's early development as a consultant, and recently assisted in the development of Salon's investigative reporting coverage on the Clinton/Whitewater scandals, which has generated critical acclaim for the company. "David is a highly respected journalist and media veteran and we're delighted to have him join our executive team as a permanent member," commented O'Donnell. "His intimate sense of the editorial process and his creative instincts will assist us in our ongoing editorial development. In addition, David will be chartered with executing Salon's strategy of syndicating more of our content to partners on and off the Web." Weir will report to David Talbot, Salon's Founder, CEO and Editor. Parker, who reports to O'Donnell, is based in Salon's New York offices where she manages its 14-member sales organization. "Liza has demonstrated an exceptional quality of understanding our customers' needs and then developing unique advertising programs within Salon's editorial framework to fill those needs," said O'Donnell. "Her sales management skills, leadership and ability to recruit talented advertising executives has helped Salon compete for major advertising contracts. We now enjoy secured contracts with over 85 advertisers, due in large part to Liza's efforts." For the past 14 years, Parker has held various media buying and selling positions in television and print, and was most recently the advertising director of the "Jerusalem Report," an international publication owned by the Bronfman family. She has also held senior management positions in advertising sales and planning/buying at Lone Trout Publications, Inflight Duty Shops, Inc., LBS Television Syndication, DMB&B New York and BBDO New York. Figallo, a founding director of the Well and acknowledged expert in online group interaction, will develop Table Talk (currently the Web's second most active reader community) in the areas of interactive events featuring special guest contributors, improved interface design and features to facilitate member participation, and growing its population and traffic while still maintaining the feel of a community. He will be reporting to O'Donnell. "Cliff's a legend in the online community arena and we look forward to his contribution and innovation in taking Table Talk to the next level," said O'Donnell. Since the Well, Figallo has managed discussion forums for America Online and he managed IBM's Deep Blue vs. Kasparov chess match. Rosenfield has been elected to its Board of Directors, joining current board members Talbot; O'Donnell; Standish O'Grady, Managing Director, Hambrecht & Quist; Kate Geldens, Associate, Hambrecht & Quist; and Sada Chidabaram, President, ASCII Ventures. Rosenfield, former president of CBS Television Network and former owner and chairman of John Blair Communications (one of the largest advertising sales organizations in the country), brings Salon more than 35 years of media experience, along with a complete understanding of the challenges facing new media companies. Rosenfield also serves as an adviser to several new media companies such as Video Networks Inc. (VNI), Hotelevision Inc., STATS, Inc. and Europe TV Inc. He is also on the board of Strategic Weather Services Inc. and KnitMedia Inc. Additionally, he is an advisor and managing director of Veronis Shuler and Associates (a New York media investment banking firm).
