SafeWeb allows users to research, read and communicate anywhere on the Web privately, securely and free of charge. The agreement runs through December 2000. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. SafeWeb works with any major Web browser and requires no downloads. Says Michael O'Donnell, CEO and president of Salon.com, "We're excited to bring SafeWeb to Salon as a major sponsor. Their Web site, which helps users surf the Web privately and securely, provides an important service to our 2.5 million unique visitors each month." "The issue of Internet privacy and security has become increasingly more controversial and volatile," said Stephen D. H. Hsu, SafeWeb's co-founder, CEO and chairman, adding, "We see our technology as an important step in letting an individual user choose to protect his or her own privacy, which is why we are delighted to introduce our service to Salon.com's millions of users and to provide them with secure and private browsing."
Adds O'Donnell, "By showcasing SafeWeb's technology to Salon's 'early adopter' audience, we hope to create a groundswell of support in the Web community that will bring back more privacy and enjoyment to Web users." Salon's award-winning site, Salon Technology, serves as an anchor location for SafeWeb's sponsor mentions. This agreement also includes a non-exclusive sponsorship of the Salon Technology site cover and Salon's book-in-progress, "The Free Software Project", banner advertising and logo placement on Salon's interior article pages.
