SALON MEDIA GROUP ONLINE CONTEST
JUNE 2001

The "Reveal the Goddess in your Life" contest is brought to you by Salon Media Group ("Sponsor"). By entering participants agree to be bound by these Official Rules and the decisions of the judges, which shall be final.

How to Enter:
You may enter the contest by submitting an essay, which must be 1,000 words or less, by email or by regular mail as described below. The essay should describe a female role-model, hero or mentor who has helped bring out the "Goddess" in you. All essays, whether postal or electronic, must be received by 11:59 p.m. PDT on August 31,2001. Limit one entry per person, regardless of method of entry. Multiple entries submitted by a single entrant, whether via online or write-in, are void. Participation in this contest constitutes entrant's full and unconditional agreement to and acceptance of these Official Rules.

E-mail submissions should be sent to goddess@salon.com, making sure to put "Goddess" in the subject header. Essays MUST BE included in the body of the e-mail, along with the author's name, mailing address, phone, and e-mail address. No attachments to the email will be accepted.

Submissions may also be mailed to "Goddess Contest", 22 Fourth Street, 16th Floor San Francisco, CA 94103. Submissions by mail must be typed, double-spaced and on white paper, with the author's name, mailing address, phone number, and e-mail address (if available).

Eligibility:
Contest is open to all persons who are legal residents of the fifty United States currently residing within the fifty United States and are 18 years of age or older at the time of entry. Employees, officers and directors of Sponsor, The Gillette Company, their parent companies, affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising, promotion, and fulfillment agencies, and legal advisors, their immediate family members and persons living in their same household are not eligible to participate in the Contest. Void where prohibited. All federal, state, and local laws and regulations apply. No purchase necessary to enter.

Prize Details:
One(1) Grand Prize winner will receive four (4) nights accommodation for two people, at the Canyon Ranch & Spa in Tucson, Arizona. Transportation is not included and will be the responsibility of the winner. Grand Prize winner's name and essay may or may not be posted on Salon.com, after the winner has signed an affidavit of eligibility for the prize. The total value of the Grand Prize will be approximately $2,000.00 for the (4) four nights accommodations. ALL TAXES ASSOCIATED WITH THE RECEIPT OF ANY PRIZES ARE THE SOLE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE WINNER. The grand prize will be awarded. The prize is non-transferable, non-replaceable and cannot be redeemed for cash, bartered or sold. Winner will be required to sign and return a release of liability, affidavit of eligibility and, where lawful, a publicity consent agreement, all within 14 days of notification. Travel partner (of Grand Prize winner) will be required to sign an affidavit as well. By accepting and/or using the prize(s), winners agree(s) to the use of their names, voices and/or likenesses for the purpose of advertising, trade or promotion without further compensation, unless prohibited by law. If a selected winner cannot be contacted, is ineligible, fails to claim a prize(s) or fails to timely return the complete and executed affidavit and releases as required, the prize will be forfeited and an alternate winner will be selected. As a condition of receiving the prize(s), the winner(s), within (10) ten days of notification, will be required to sign an agreement granting to Salon Media Group all publication rights to the essay(s), together with all ancillary and subsidiary rights, throughout the world and in any and all formats and media and including the right to grant sublicenses and to use the author's name in connection with the business of Salon Media Group, and acknowledging that the prize(s) shall be the author's sole compensation for such rights. The agreement will also contain the author's representation that the work submitted is original to the author and does not infringe on the rights of any third party.

Selection of Winner:
Winner will be selected from all eligible entries on or around September 15, 2001. The winner will be notified by phone, e-mail or mail. Essays will be judged by representatives from Salon Media Group and Gillette on the basis of creativity, technical skill and distinct voice. The winner will have (10) ten days from notification to accept their prizes. Sponsor is not responsible for and shall not be liable for late, lost, misdirected or unsuccessful efforts to notify winner. By entering, participants agree to be bound by these Official Rules and the decisions of the judges, which shall be final. Sponsor, agents and representatives of Sponsors, their parent companies, affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising, promotion, and fulfillment agencies, and legal advisors, are not responsible for and shall not be liable for:
(i) late, lost, delayed, damaged, misdirected, incomplete, illegible, unintelligible or postage-due entries;
ii) any condition caused by events beyond the control of the Sponsor that may cause the Contest to be disrupted or corrupted;
(iii) any injuries, losses, or damages of any kind a rising in connection with or as a result of the prize, or acceptance, possession, or use of the prize, or from participation in the Contest; or
(iv) any printing or typographical errors in any materials associated with the Contest. Salon Media Group reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to suspend or cancel this Contest at any time. By participating in the Contest, participants agree to release and hold Sponsors and the employees, officers, directors, shareholders, agents, representatives of Sponsors, their parent companies, affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising, promotion and fulfillment agencies, and legal advisors, harmless from any and all losses, damages, rights, claims and actions of any kind in connection with the Contest or resulting from acceptance, possession or use of any prize, including without limitation, personal injury, death and property damage, and claims based on content of the story, including but not limited to publicity rights, copyright infringement, defamation or invasion of privacy. Winners will be selected by September 15, 2001, and announced once all affidavits of eligibility have been satisfactorily completed and returned.

Miscellaneous:
The Sponsors decisions on winner selection and on all matters relating to this promotion are final and binding. If for any reason the Internet portion of the program is not capable of running as planned, including infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or any other causes beyond the control of the sponsor which corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of thissweepstakes, the Sponsor reserves the right at its sole discretion, to disqualify any individual who tampers with the entry process, and to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the sweepstakes. Caution: Any attempt by a contestant to deliberately damage any Web site or undermine the legitimate operation of the game is a violation ofcriminal and civil laws and should such an attempt be made, sponsor reserves the right to seek damages from any such contestant to the fullest extent of the law. Entrants agree that the Releasees shall not be liable and shall hold Releasees for claims, actions,injury, loss or damage of any kind resulting from participating in this promotion or from the acceptance or use of any prize awarded.

The Sponsor reserves the right to verify eligibility qualifications of any winner. U.S. law governs this sweepstakes. The Sponsor may, but is not required to enter into correspondence, including e-mail, with any entrant regarding entry status. Salon Media Group is not liable for and accepts no responsibility for complications due to: issues of safety, unexpected acts of nature, safety issues or complications, or issues of additional tax or cost. Contestant may enter only once. Subsequent entries will be disqualified. All entries become the property of Salon Media Group and its sponsors and may not be returned. In the event of a dispute, entries will be deemed made by the authorized account holder of the e-mail address submitted at time of entry. Authorized account holder is deemed as the natural person who is assigned to an email address by an Internet access provider, online service provider or other organization that is responsible for assigning e-mail addresses or the domain associated with the submitted e-mail address. By participating in the contest, entrants agree to the use of their names, voices and/or likenesses for the purpose of advertising, trade or promotion without further compensation, unless prohibited by law, and acknowledge as a condition of participation their names may be used in conjunction with the business of Salon Media Group.
