Ivan the Terrible is the subject of a new Biography (8 p.m. EDT/9 PDT, A&E). Kathy Baker from "Picket Fences" does "Fences" creator David E. Kelley a turn and appears on his new show, Ally McBeal (9 p.m., Fox). She plays the widow of a law school professor Ally once slept with. On Buffy the Vampire Slayer (9 p.m., WB), Buffy meets the Master's newest protégé. Community outrage follows the death in custody of the cop-killing suspect on Brooklyn South (10 p.m., CBS). Dateline NBC (10 p.m., NBC) reports on a woman who had to make a difficult choice when she was diagnosed with breast cancer during her pregnancy.

Monday Night Football: 49ers at Panthers (9 p.m., ABC).

Whoopi Goldberg and Gladys Knight visit Rosie O'Donnell (syndicated); David Letterman (CBS) welcomes Fran Drescher; Andre Agassi, Willie Nelson and Andy Richter guest on Jay Leno (NBC); Tom Snyder (CBS) talks with CBS Television President Leslie Moonves; Salon's "Unzipped" columnist Courtney Weaver is a panelist on Politically Incorrect (ABC).

The Sept. 25 live episode of ER got a predictably whopping 31.2 rating/46 share. Early ratings casualties of the new season: ABC's Thursday night dramas Nothing Sacred, about the hip priest, and Cracker, about the disheveled shrink, both came in fourth in their time slots. Ouch. ABC did have a big win with the Sept. 24 season premieres of The Drew Carey Show and Ellen beating the hour-long season opener of NBC's 3rd Rock from the Sun.

Other stuff: Khandi Alexander is leaving NBC's NewsRadio, reportedly because she's unhappy with the lack of storylines and screen time for her news anchor character, Catherine Duke. The only surprise here is that she gave the producers three seasons to shape up. The consistently under-utilized Alexander will depart the show with an open-ended storyline that has Catherine moving on to a more high-profile job.
