Softball too: See ya

As Yahoo's Dan Wetzel points out, the U.S. is the only country playing the sport at a high level.

I wrote Wednesday that while baseball and tennis should go from the Olympics, softball ought to stay, because the best athletes in the world show up and the Olympics represent the pinnacle of the sport.

Baseball and softball will be gone as of the 2012 games in London.

Dan Wetzel of Yahoo Sports writes about softball, and he says it's high time for it to get the boot as well. He makes an excellent point that didn't even occur to me: Nobody can compete with the United States.

Pointing out that the U.S. team is 64-3 in international play since dropping three games on the way to the gold medal in 2000, Wetzel writes, "This isn't the Dream Team of men's basketball, raising world competition with its brilliance. The gap in softball is widening."

Good point. OK, I'm in: Softball goes too.
