It may have been nice to see the youngest or oldest actress nab an Oscar. But J.Law's win was worth the trip

Last night, a debate broke out among our friends on whether the 22-year-old Jennifer Lawrence, now crowned by the academy as the best actress for her terrific performance in "Silver Linings Playbook," will have staying power. One insisted she was a flash in the pan. The rest of us, who first fell hard for her in "Winter's Bone," argued that she really does have the chops. Who can say, really. Remember, Dr. Haing S. Ngor won an Oscar for his brilliant performance in "The Killing Fields," and that was pretty much the last we saw of him. So, only time will tell how her career pans out, though she's poised — with the Hunger Games franchise, and a new deal to reteam with David O. Russell — to stick around for a while. Really, the question that lingers is: Why are young women held to such scrutiny?

The resentment toward the "Girls" star was in full force at the Globes. Why do people begrudge her her success?

I couldn’t help noticing last evening, as I cheered for Lena Dunham, who won two Golden Globes, that those around her were decidedly less enthusiastic. Chilly even. I understand that no one likes to lose or see their friends lose, but faking some gracious smiles (you are supposed to be actors, after all) would have been nice. As well as appropriate, given that Dunham is clearly a talented young woman with great promise. I’d think that everyone in that room, knowing how the business works, would go out of their way to applaud the young and gifted Dunham if for no other reason than they might want to ask her for a job one day. If for no other reason, ladies, than she’s a young woman making it in a world still dominated by old men. And, hopefully, not being of a generation where women have felt pitted against each other — token against token — she will be good for the "girls."

If the Oscars are a defining pseudo-event of our time – a self-promotional industry trade show we have all agreed to invest with larger cultural meaning – then what term could possibly be adequate to describe the Golden Globes? If anything, the Globes now possess an aura of pure cheesed-out spectacle that is sometimes masked by the self-seriousness of the Oscars. Journalists often treat the academy’s annual election season, with its voter base comprising a few thousand elderly folks in the western half of Los Angeles County, as if it were the Super Tuesday primaries, and as such susceptible to all sorts of amateur social science and insider-baseball analysis.

After decades of ducking the issue, a "big coming out speech" -- whether she meant to do it or not

She never said "gay." Or "lesbian." In fact, as she accepted the Cecil B. DeMille Award for her outstanding Hollywood career at the Golden Globes Sunday night, Jodie Foster specifically said, "I'm not going to do a big coming out speech tonight." And this, for a woman who has spent her adult life fiercely refusing to comment on her personal life, was what coming out looked like. Instead, she explained, "I already did my coming out speech about a thousand years ago, back in the Stone Age."

It was a moment many fans assumed would never arrive at all, and one of the most unexpected things to ever happen at the Globes. It was awkward and at times angry and brave and strange. Because Foster, ever one to do it her way, didn't choose to make her declaration via an in-depth sit-down with Oprah, or an open letter to Andrew Sullivan. Instead, she mixed it into a rambly speech that seemed equal parts defiant and terrified, one in which she channeled her inner Sally O'Malley by announcing, with a swagger that threatened to turn her award acceptance speech into an impromptu keynote for the Red Hat Society, "I'm FIFTY." She did it on a night in which she sat flanked by her two sons on one side and grim-faced, acknowledged domestic abuser Mel Gibson on the other. She did it in a speech in which she confidently stated her age but confessed her nerves before saying, "I'm just gonna put it out there, right? Loud and proud, right? So I'm gonna need your support on this. I am … single. Yes I am, I am single. No, I'm kidding. But I mean, I'm not really kidding, but I'm kind of kidding."

Comedians Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, the first female pair to ever co-host the Golden Globes, lost no time laying on the jokes in their opening monologue. Of course they ripped into three-time host Ricky Gervais, widely criticized for his off-color humor at the awards show, saying,"Ricky Gervais could not be here tonight because he is technically no longer in show business. We want to assure you that we have no intention of being edgy or offensive tonight because as Ricky Gervais found out the hard way, when you run afoul of the Hollywood Foreign Press, they make you host this show two more times."

Watch the actress's bizarre but moving speech at the Golden Globes

Jodie Foster, who at 50 has been acting for 47 years, accepted a lifetime achievement award at Sunday night's Golden Globe Awards. The actress stunned the audience, however when she made a cryptic "coming out" announcement, saying “I’m not going to do a big coming out speech tonight. Because I already did my coming out speech about a thousand years ago, back in the stone age.” She also alluded to retiring (she's not).

Although her raw, sincere words about her desire for privacy brought many in the audience to tears, Twitter was flooded with a range of reactions as complex as Foster's speech. While some saw it as inspiring, many were confused about why a fierce privacy advocate might decide to come out publicly at all (though BuzzFeed's Kate Aurthur notes that she already came out publicly in 2007), and still others were unimpressed:

[embed_tweet id="290730462647832576"]

[embed_tweet id="290711559376887808"]

[embed_tweet id="290658146177933313"]

[embed_tweet id="290734424541257728"]

[embed_tweet id="290706075555086336"]

Watch Foster's speech below:
