John McAfee is leaving Guatemala for U.S.

Anti-virus software founder John McAfee has been released from detention in Guatemala and is heading to the United States.

Guatemalan immigration officials have escorted McAfee to the Guatemala City airport. McAfee says he's going to catch a flight to Miami, Florida. McAfee said Wednesday, "I'm free, I'm going to America."

An Associated Press reporter spotted McAfee through the window of the detention center earlier on Wednesday. He was dressed in a black suit without a tie and appeared relaxed.

A lawyer for McAfee first said on Tuesday that a judge has ordered the software company founder released from a Guatemalan detention center where he has been fighting being returned to Belize. Attorney Telesforo Guerra said the judge notified him verbally of the ruling, but added that it might take a day for formal written notification.

McAfee has said he wants to return to the United States with his 20-year-old Belizean girlfriend. Guerra said that would be his client's best option.

"For me, it's best that McAfee go to the United States, that's definitely the country where he will be safest," Guerra said. "In Guatemala, he runs the risk that anything could happen to him."

Reports surfaced yesterday that the 67-year-old American computer programmer had retreated to Belize, after losing his software millions and becoming heavily involved with MDPV—a psychoactive drug once marketed as "bath salts" that is now banned in the US. Today came news that McAfee is wanted by authoritiesfor murdering his neighbor, and has buried himself in the sand "with a cardboard box over his head" for fear of being interrogated, according to an interview with Wired. Belize authorities confirm that they're looking for him "in connection with the murder" of Gregory Faull, who was found dead from a gunshot wound, a few days after he filed a complaint against McAfee for "roguish behavior." The programmer, credited with saving millions of American PCs from viruses in the '90s, says he's innocent, but won't give himself up: "You can say I'm paranoid about it but they will kill me, there is no question," he said today. "I will not turn myself in."
