A sampling of this morning's columns about the Boston Marathon bombing in today's Boston Globe and Boston Herald

Boston has a tradition of great city columnists. Here's a sampling of what some of them are writing in today's editions of the Boston Globe and the Boston Herald.

Kevin Cullen in The Boston Globe

This is how bad this is. I went out Monday night and bumped into some firefighters I know. They said one of the dead was an 8-year-old boy from Dorchester who had gone out to hug his dad after he crossed the finish line. The dad walked on; the boy went back to the sidewalk to join his mom and his little sister. And then the bomb went off. The boy was killed. His sister’s leg was blown off. His mother was badly injured. That’s just one family, one story.

Gerry Callahan in The Boston Herald

Dreamworks and Participant have bought life rights to the story about the newspaper's Spotlight Team

Dreamworks has bought life rights to the story of the Boston Globe's Spotlight Team, who in 2003 won a Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for exposing sexual abuse in the Catholic Church. "The Boston Globe's coverage of the Catholic priest scandal opened the door to a bigger story that had worldwide ramifications," said DreamWorks president Holly Bario.

From the Hollywood Reporter:

Life rights have been acquired to the Boston Globe's "Spotlight Team" of reporters and editors, including then-Globe editor Marty Baron, special projects editor Ben Bradlee Jr., Spotlight Team editor Walter "Robby" Robinson and reporters Michael Rezendes, Sacha Pfeiffer and Matt Carroll.

The team spent a year interviewing victims and reviewing thousands of pages of documents and discovered years of cover-up by Church leadership. Their reporting eventually led to the resignation of Cardinal Bernard Law, who had hidden years of serial abuse by other priests and opened the floodgates to other revelations of molestation and cover-ups around the world that still reverberate today.

Tom McCarthy will direct and co-write the script with Josh Singer, THR reports. Boston Magazine already has some casting suggestions for the Globe reporters.

The announcement comes four years after the first sale attempt

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The New York Times Co. said Wednesday that it is putting The Boston Globe and its related assets up for sale four years after it called off a previous attempt to sell the newspaper.

Mark Thompson, the Times' chief executive, said in a statement a sale would be in the best long-term interests of both properties, "given the differences between these businesses and The New York Times."

Thompson said the sale would help the company concentrate its attention and investments on The New York Times' brand.

The newspapers' differences are stark. The Times has a national - even international - audience, and has been adding digital subscribers at a rapid clip. Last year, it launched a Chinese-language website and has a loyal, growing subscriber base in the U.S.

Meanwhile, the Globe is focused on its readers in the New England region, and while its digital subscriptions have been increasing, analysts believe they aren't rising fast enough to be meaningful. The Globe had 28,000 digital subscribers at the end of 2012, up 8 percent from three months earlier.

In comparison, the Times and International Herald Tribune had 640,000 paying subscribers online, up 13 percent over three months.

The Boston Globe gained access to Romney's sealed testimony from a 1991 divorce case

A judge has granted the Boston Globe access to sealed testimony that Mitt Romney gave in his friend's 1991 divorce case. The case involves the divorce of Staples founder Tom Stemberg, who has been a Romney surrogate this campaign cycle, and his now-ex-wife Maureen Sullivan Stemberg.

From the Globe's report from before the hearing:

"All documents in the divorce case were impounded, and all parties signed a confidentiality agreement that prevents them from discussing details of the case with the press. The Globe is seeking only Romney’s testimony, which he delivered in June 1991.

At the time of the divorce, Romney was the owner and chief executive of Bain Capital, a private equity firm that invested $650,000 in Staples to help the office supply company open its first store in Brighton in 1986. In total, Bain Capital invested about $2.5 million in Staples and reaped a $13 million profit when the company went public in 1989. Romney sat on the Staples board of directors."
