So long Sandy, Donald Glover's black Republican on "Girls," we hardly knew ye. Then again, black Republicans have long been used as symbolic props, so why not on this show?

"It is very important to me, as a minority female, that Congressman Scott earned this seat. He earned this seat for the person that he is; he earned this seat for the results he has shown; he earned this seat for what I know he’s going to do in making South Carolina and making our country proud," said South Carolina governor Nikki Haley last month as she appointed Tim Scott to serve as the state's senator -- making him the only African-American in the Senate. This creepy doublespeak gave Haley a shot at having it both ways: celebrating diversity while implying it could be better and more fairly achieved by Republican bootstrapping.

HBO's "Girls" began its second season last Sunday night — on the same night it won all those Golden Globes — following a polarizing first season that was wildly adored by some (including me) and wildly despised by others. One of the major flashpoints, if not the major flashpoint, was race. The first season of "Girls" was very, very white — an issue that comes up in the first two episodes, with Lena Dunham's character Hannah Horvath dating a guy played by "Community's" Donald Glover, who we learn tonight is also a Republican. Jenni Konner, the show's executive producer and co-showrunner alongside Dunham, spoke with me about black Republicans, the "Girls" backlash and the things that really worry her and Lena Dunham.

It feels to me like the show has gotten more comedic and broad as it has gone on.

With all the places (and stages of undress) we've seen Lena Dunham in lately, it's easy to forget what it was all leading up to: the next season of her Emmy Award-winning series,"Girls" -- the show everyone has an opinion on. Today, HBO dropped the Season 2 trailer, which reveals that Dunham's character, Hannah, and ex-best friend Marnie (Allison Williams) are apparently hanging out again, Salon sexy man Adam Driver (Adam Sackler) is in love with Hannah -- stalkerishly so -- and that they are all still a bunch of neurotic, imperfect 20-somethings who "don't know what they want." The trailer doesn't reveal all the surprises, though: There's still no telling what role comedian Donald Glover's character will play.

Season 2 premieres on Sunday, Jan. 13.
