THE OPENING CREDITS of Showtime’s "Homeland" are a fever dream. The title appears in negative over a full-frame shot of a small, blonde girl sleeping as anxious music plays under audio of Ronald Reagan’s 1986 speech announcing an attack on facilities owned by Muammar Qaddafi. Cut to the girl sitting on the floor watching television as the radio newsman announces that the 1988 Pan Am Flight 103 has crashed in Lockerbie, Scotland. The little girl practices a trill on her trumpet in her bedroom; she stands in a labyrinth wearing a dress and a lion mask. Presidents Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush address the nation, emphasizing the words America, aggression, terrorism. The girl, now older and looking weary, opens her eyes. Panicked people run through the streets of New York City; a smoke plume rises in the distance over the Brooklyn Bridge.

We drill "Homeland's" Damian Lewis about the show's heavily anticipated new season -- and he spills a few secrets

"Homeland," Showtime's heart-stopping psychological thriller, finally returns tonight, picking up six months after last year's high-stress finale. (Remember: Marine Sgt. Nicholas Brody flipping the switch on a faulty suicide vest in an enclosed bunker?)

On the occasion of the premiere, I spoke with Damian Lewis, the newly minted Emmy winner who plays Brody. The British actor spoke about what's to come in season two, Brody's predicament and the Brody-Carrie dynamic.

At the end of last season, Brody told Abu Nazir he didn't want to commit violence on his behalf. How committed do you think Brody is to that?

Clearly some form of parting of the ways with Abu Nazir has gone on. In season two, it feels like Brody’s an ex-con. He wants a second chance at life. He is given a second chance at life through the love of his daughter, the daughter who was able to pierce that trancelike bubble he was in, this cocoon he was in. And Brody wants to achieve his political means — political aims — with nonviolent means. That is a parting of the ways from Abu Nazir. That wasn’t the initial mission statement. What’s going on now is Brody is still trying to convince Abu Nazir that there is another way, and that Brody does not want to be caught up in the killing of innocent civilians. It’s a little unclear at this point what he has in mind for Vice President Walden. But I think it’s intended that we believe he is not going to do anything violent toward him. He just needs to insinuate himself, somehow, into American policy and subvert politically from within. And that will cause tension with Abu Nazir down the line.

The winners were obvious, but there were still some genuine laughs: Chicken sandwich with two pickles, anyone?

It was a night that was dominated by lackluster bits – let's never speak of that lame Tracy Morgan Twitter "prank" again -- and few surprises. "Modern Family" won and Jon Hamm lost as usual. But for those viewers who had the patience and fortitude to stick with this year's broadcast (which mercifully wrapped up not one minute overtime), there were a few moments of genuine levity and warmth among the forced smiles and awkward patter. The best theme of the night? Nominees who showed they know how to play well with each other. Herewith our picks for the evenings brightest highlights.

Eric Stonestreet's pitch-perfect acceptance

Acknowledging his sitcom husband, Stonestreet said, "I wouldn't be standing here without Jesse Tyler Ferguson. There is no Cam without Mitch." Then he continued, beautifully, "We get the awesome opportunity to play these two characters on TV and show America and the world what a loving couple we can be, just like everybody else, and it's an honor to do that," and added, "I never knew I'd be on TV as a gay man, but I love the pictures of hairy chests you guys are sending me." Sweet and touching and very funny.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus' win … for Amy Poehler

Don Draper has been shut out, despite "Mad Men's" awards. Now there's competition from "Homeland" and "Downton"

As if there were not enough going on in the TV universe right now, the Emmy Awards air this Sunday night, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. This year’s nominations were pretty forward thinking ("Louie"! Lena! Schmidt!), but will the awards themselves be? Or will it be “Modern Family” and “Mad Men” all over again? (Not that I’m complaining about "Mad Men.") Here are some category-specific story lines to look out for on Sunday night.

1.) Best drama, or can “Mad Men” hold off “Downton Abbey” and “Homeland”?

There’s a story in the New York Times today all about how psyched PBS is on “Downton Abbey’s” Emmy hopes. Objectively, Season 2 of the British costume drama was inconsistent — Matthew’s vanishing paralysis! Bates turning into a whiny maybe-murderer! That amnesiac heir covered in bandages!— but it’s got momentum, more viewers than “Mad Men” and an audience who doesn’t really care how bad it can be. Moreover, “Mad Men” has won best drama four years in a row, and no show has ever won five in a row. If “Downton’s” not the show to upset “Mad Men," there’s always Showtime’s far more deserving “Homeland."

Nominees included movie actors like Kevin Costner and Nicole Kidman

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Long before Kevin Costner, Bryan Cranston, Christina Hendricks and Nicole Kidman were Emmy nominees, they were kids who loved watching TV.

"I liked 'Man from Uncle' and 'High Chaparral,'" Costner said. "I really, really liked that when I was a kid."

"I remember the transition from black-and-white to color," continued Costner, who is nominated as both star and producer of the TV movie "Hatfields & McCoys." ''It like one by one the televisions in my neighborhood became color TVs and we would all go look at each other's color TVs and ooh and aah at 'Bonanza.' I'm kind of glad I saw it all, in a way. I remember the TV would shut off at 11 and just play the national anthem all night long."

Cranston, who is nominated for his role on "Breaking Bad" — which won him the Emmy Award three years in a row, grew up on "The Andy Griffith Show."

"I love the character of Barney: Classic comic character of the absolute confident man with no ability whatsoever. Always funny. The calm and comforting tones of Andy Griffith, who we lost recently," the actor said. "I think there was just something very sweet and comforting about watching that show, and the simplicity of the lifestyle and a days-gone-by kind of thing."

Emmy nominations were just announced (you can see a full list of nominees here), and while there are inevitably some disappointments — what, no “Parks and Recreation” in best-comedy category?? — this year the Emmy voters have done good, really good. They've behaved like people who not only watch TV but really adore the TV that they watch. Typically, the most frustrating thing about the Emmys has been the grandfathering in of previously nominated shows that have fallen off the quality cliff. This year, that bad habit was largely set aside. Aging shows like “Glee," “Dexter," and "The Office" made way for the new, better and more vibrant (“Downton Abbey,” “Homeland,” “Girls,” “Veep"). This year's Emmy nominations have a fan’s spirit.

"Girls" and "Homeland" are just two of the story lines to watch when Emmy nominations are announced tomorrow

The Emmys — 2012 nominations will be announced tomorrow morning — are a bit like the Oscars' talented, handsome (but not quite as talented or handsome) little brother. As far as awards shows go, they're a pretty big deal (more prestigious if less fun than the Golden Globes; more famous than the SAGs; more reputable than the People’s Choice, America’s Choice, MTV Choice; less likely to feature performances from Skrillex and/or Steely Dan than the Grammys). But the campaigning, as well as the event itself, are relatively tame in comparison to the three-ring hype circus that is the Oscars. (Though there have been some moves this year to make the Emmys race as much a spectator sport as the Oscars). TV stars are still not quite as glamorous as movie stars, Jon Hamm aside, and because they are up for the same awards year after year, as are the shows they appear on, the Emmys have an element of sameness the movie awards lack. But if some things are preordained (like, Alec Baldwin will get nominated and so will all the adult actors on "Modern Family"), not everything is set. Here are some things I’ll be looking out for tomorrow morning.

Fox says it cut Alec Baldwin\'s phone-hacking joke to be \"sensitive\" -- but to the victims or the boss?

The Emmys, as Sunday night's broadcast repeatedly reminded us, is supposed to be one big industry "family reunion." In many ways, it is. Every year, the same beloved members of the pack are praised while everybody else smiles stiffly and waits around for the chance to get good and drunk. There are occasional moments of surprise, and times to honor those no longer with us. There's gentle joshing around. And somebody's feelings get hurt. Like those of a multinational conglomerate.

As part of a pretaped satirical bit that was to air during the opening of the show, Emmy-winner Alec Baldwin played a fictional network president talking on the phone -- and worked in a zinger about Rupert Murdoch listening in. But Fox, which broadcast the show this year, apparently did not find the gag about its parent company amusing. On Thursday, Baldwin tweeted that "I did a short Emmy pretape a few days ago. Now they tell me News Corp may cut the funniest line. #NewsCorphumorlessaswellascorrupt"

That might have had something to do with the Murdoch empire's exhaustive and continuing phone hacking scandal in the U.K. – a stunning breach of privacy by News Corp that affected not just gossip-page celebrities but the families of soldiers and murder victims.

"A lot of people are very curious why I'm a lesbian ... Ladies and gentlemen, the cast of 'Entourage.'" -- Jane Lynch

That was the best line of the 2011 Emmy broadcast on Fox -- a surprisingly non-boring awards show (during the second half anyway) that saw "Modern Family" dominating the comedy categories, "Mad Men" and "Mildred Pierce" getting their well-dressed derrieres handed to them in the drama and movie/miniseries categories, and outgoing "Two and a Half Men" star Charlie Sheen sporting what looked like a wig made of wolverine hair, and wishing the best of luck to his old co-workers in remarks that were so robotic that I kept anticipating a punch line that never came. (Earlier this year, Sheen was a crack-addled, woman-abusing pariah who blasted his boss Chuck Lorre as a "maggot"and a "nut-less sociopath" and called former costar Jon Cryer "a turncoat, a traitor and a troll"; now he's in the express lane to redemption and prepping another sitcom. Ah, Hollywood.)

Take, for example, the evening's opening number, which saw host Jane Lynch bounding through a half-dozen TV shows, singing, dancing and cracking wise throughout.

Melissa McCarthy of "Mike & Molly" was honored Sunday as best lead actress in a comedy series with an Emmy and a glitzy prom queen's crown, while Jim Parsons of "The Big Bang Theory" earned his second trophy in the best actor category.

"Holy smokes. Wow, it's my first and best pageant ever," said a beaming McCarthy. Among them is the box-office hit "Bridesmaids," which featured McCarthy.

Parsons looked genuinely surprised at his victory. "This is so odd for so many reasons. I was assured by many people in my life that this wasn't happening," he said.

The ceremony aired by Fox opened with a pre-taped comedy sketch that generated controversy because Alec Baldwin's part was cut after he included a joke about the News Corp. phone hacking scandal.
Slide show: Forget best actress in a drama. We imagine a completely different -- and more fun -- Emmy broadcast

The 63rd Emmy Awards are scheduled for Sunday (Fox, 8 p.m./7 Central), with "Glee" star Jane Lynch hosting. As always, there will be dozens of statuettes handed out, and as always, only some of the satisfactions I get from TV will be represented. Actors, actresses, directors, writers and series get recognition, but by and large, the awards don't quite match up with the way regular viewers watch (and talk about) television.

This slide show will try to remedy that sad state of affairs. Going beyond the standard Emmy categories -- and invoking the spirit of the MTV Movie Awards but not its consistently awful taste -- we're handing out laurels in 10 categories not recognized by the Emmys: best individual episode of a drama, comedy and unscripted series; best monologue; best love scene; best comedy sequence; best cameo; best death scene; best action sequence; and best monster.

My eligibility period is the same as that of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences: June 1, 2010, through May 21, 2011. If the program did not air between those dates, I did not consider it for inclusion in this slide show. So if you're wondering why there are no awards for "Breaking Bad," that's the reason -- the same reason it's not up for any Emmys on Sunday.

I hope you'll list your own favorites in these categories -- and maybe devise some new categories! -- in the Letters section.

A list of some of the great TV series and performers who should have been nominated -- but weren't

"If my mom and dad were alive, this Emmy snub would kill them," Tweeted Kurt Sutter, the creator of the critically acclaimed but Emmy-snubbed biker drama "Sons of Anarchy." "That's not true," he added. "They were too old to understand my show. Just like the academy."

Sutter's rage is ill-advised -- nobody wins over the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences by calling them out-of-touch fools. But it wasn't wrong on the merits. The academy's attitude boils down to, "If you're in, for whatever reason, you're in for life, and if you're out, you will always be out." The academy's membership snubs good people and shows while rewarding the same favorites (some deserving, others not) time and time again. Even changing the rules doesn't seem to affect this dynamic.

Rant over. Submitted for your approval: My list of the worst snubs, and the most pleasing nominations. I hope you'll chime in with your own in the Letters section.

What a night! "Mad Men" wins the Emmy for outstanding drama, Don Draper wins the Clio for his Glo Coat campaign, and Peggy wins a major victory against dismissive art director Stan Rizzo -- which inspires him to bestow upon her the "prize for smuggest bitch in the world."

But Matthew Weiner might deserve that prize for crafting a whole episode around the Clio awards and the arbitrary nature of success to run on Emmy night. "You finish something, you find out everyone loves it right around the time that it feels like someone else did it," Don says of his nomination for a Clio, foreshadowing his subsequent out-of-body experience.
