In a deadly dull awards season, Hollywood actually needs an edgy Golden Globes performance to get people talking

In the lead-up to Sunday's Golden Globe Awards, all eyes are on the return of host Ricky Gervais -- specifically about the snark that earned him a career-enhancing dose of notoriety when he took some swings at his fellow celebrities at the same ceremony last year.

Gervais is in the New York Times Magazine, where David Itzkoff explains his comedic swings from kind impulses to mean-spirited rawness. In Vulture, Willa Paskin worries that all the focus on Gervais’ edge is leading him to buy his own hype, obscuring the fact that he’s very much a part of the club he got credit for lampooning. NBC’s own ad campaign features Gervais talking about how controversial it is for him to be back. In as much as the 2012 Globes are must-see television, it’s supposed to be because of the man riffing at the podium, rather than the artists who will deliver grateful speeches from it.

Is "Dragon Tattoo" off the list? What about Spielberg? Salon critics analyze the picks with an eye on the future

Andrew O'Hehir:

Since the Golden Globes nominate both films and actors in two streams of categories -- what they call "drama" vs. "musical or comedy" -- they have the luxury of not winnowing down the awards race at all, and just handing things out promiscuously. So you have to look at the Globe nominations and ask, in effect, "Which of these things does not belong here?"

For instance, I have difficulty believing that "The Ides of March," "50/50" or "Bridesmaids" are legitimate Oscar contenders, and all three of those just got best-picture nods from the Globes. (Given that we don't know how many films the Academy will nominate, I suppose their presence creates intriguing possibilities.) Similarly, there were some improbable nominations in the acting categories. No one seriously expects Brendan Gleeson or Joseph Gordon-Levitt or Kristen Wiig to be among the nominees on Oscar night -- which is not in any way a suggestion that their work doesn't deserve it. I'm strictly playing horse-race analyst here.

Ricky Gervais dropped some jaws with his Golden Globes performance this year. And they want him back

"Hello and welcome to the 68th annual Golden Globe Awards live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. It's going to be a night of partying and heavy drinking. Or as Charlie Sheen calls it: breakfast."

Expect more of that next year. The Hollywood Foreign Press wants Ricky Gervais and his headline-grabbing one-liners back on stage next year. The British comedian drew some criticism for being a meanie with a performance during which "decades' worth of skepticism and resentment bubbled to the surface." Gervais stood by his borderline offensive, somewhat derogatory and sometimes just plain hilarious jokes.

We stand by the hope that maybe, just maybe, next year's Golden Globes, Ricky will reunite with his early 80s glampop band Seona Dancing.

And in case you haven't seen it, here's this year's terrific opening monologue.

Svelte, sexy and somewhat androgynous, the cheeky Golden Globes host has always had an edge

Today, in fun things on the Internet: a very confusing doppelgänger that we thought was a prank. It's true. Ricky Gervais started his career in a glam-pop band.

Though the Internet has known about this for a while, interest over Ricky Gervais' polarizing performance at the Golden Globes has stirred the skeletons in the closet. Nearly 30 years ago, a slimmer, prettier Gervais stole the hearts of millions as lead singer of Seona Dancing, a British New Wave group. (That's pronounced "shawna dahn-cing.") Along with Bill Macrae, Gervais started the band in his last year at the University College, London, and enjoyed a moderate amount of success. Seona Dancing topped the charts -- or rather showed up on the charts at No. 79 -- with their hit "Bitter Heart." The video pretty much sums up a lot about the '80s:

Maybe Americans still just don't get British humor..

Academy Award hosts Anne Hathaway and James Franco are unlikely to be seeking tips from Ricky Gervais.

The British comedian was brash, profane and cruelly funny at Sunday's Golden Globes, delivering his trademark humor as promised for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in his second go-round as host of the ceremony that has "butt-talking" appearances by Jim Carrey and Jack Nicholson in its history.

At its heart, pairing the right host with the right awards show is a delicate form of matchmaking. The relationship should be unpredictable but not self-destructive, capturing TV viewers and Nielsen ratings without alienating the stars who come to be celebrated.

More than a few brave hosts have discovered how daunting the brief affair can be. That includes David Letterman, who has yet to shed memories of his bumpy 1995 Oscar gig that included an oddball phonetics bit mocking the names of Uma Thurman and Oprah Winfrey.

"Ricky Gervais was the host of the (Globes) show -- very funny guy," Letterman said on his late-night CBS show Monday. "But there's already talk that he'll never be invited back, and I say, 'Hey, welcome to the club.'"

During last night's awards show, decades' worth of skepticism and resentment bubbled to the surface

Sixty-eight years' worth of ingrained cynicism about the Golden Globes came to a head last night. But before designating Ricky Gervais the bad mojo patsy of the disastrous 68th annual Golden Globes telecast, let's establish a few salient facts.

First, gleeful needling has been that comic’s stock-in-trade for about two decades, and the awards show’s governing body, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, hired Gervais to host the broadcast in 2010 as well. Unless you're a complete dunderhead, you don’t invite a scorpion into your tent without expecting him to sting you, especially after inviting him in exactly one year earlier and getting stung 23 times in the face.

Second, it’s not as though the Golden Globes ceremony had much dignity to lose. Stars attend and viewers watch not in spite of the event's junior-prom after-party atmosphere, but because of it. On the Oscars and Emmy broadcasts, it’s a big deal when people go off-script, act like fools, or bite the hands that feed them. On the Globes telecast, we expect such behavior and feel disappointed if we don’t get oodles of it.

"Avatar" is killing worldwide. Literally.

A 42-year-man in Taiwan died of a stroke during a screening earlier this week. "It's likely that the over-excitement from watching the movie triggered his symptoms," his doctor said.

And in the truest test of cultural relevance, the New York Times just ran a "think" piece on the controversies surrounding "Avatar," rounding up a bunch of commentators and purported experts who projected their own dubious meanings into the film's success.

Now it's my turn.

Critic Manny Farber had it right, There are two kinds of movies: "White Elephants" and "Termite Art." One wins Oscars and rules at the box office. Critics and smarty-pants cineastes love the other.

What are we, then, to make of James Cameron?

Cameron is simultaneously a White Elephant filmmaker who makes huge, overstuffed popular fantasies and also, agonizingly, a Termite Artist. In the words of Farber, Termite Art "goes always forward eating its own boundaries, and, likely as not, leaves nothing in its path other than the signs of eager, industrious, unkempt activity."

Surely many of you are bumming over that fact that "Glee's" Jane Lynch <strike>lost</strike> was robbed in the best supporting actress category at last night's Golden Globes, but this video clip of a pre-show red carpet interview with the L.A Times is sure to make you smile. Looking glamorous as all heck, despite being huddled under an umbrella, she answers the usual boring questions about her dress and jewelry. Then a reporter goes for another lame query: "What's in the bag?" But there is nothing lame about Lynch's response: She glances at her sparkly clutch and says plainly, "My invitation, a little bit of lipstick and ... a tampon, to be perfectly honest." This nets a few laughs from the gaggle of reporters, one of whom playfully asks whether Lynch is feeling lucky. "I'm feeling real lucky tonight," she says sarcastically. "I'm menstruating, I'm in my lady power -- and I am young enough to still be menstruating!" Sure, she wasn't lucky enough to go home with a statuette -- blame it on "the curse" -- but she is certainly the winner of Best Break From Red Carpet Decorum.

I'm not going to write about the Oscars. I refuse to do it. It's all too much. Seven full weeks before the Academy Awards and the New York Times dedicates an entire section to the Oscars (in an attempt to attract additional ad revenues). How will they ever top that? What's going to happen on the day of the Oscars? Will its news section be festooned with nothing but Oscar coverage? And why even muse about the telecast, since the best choice as host, Ricky Gervais, is emceeing the Golden Globes this weekend instead?

And why aren't any pundits (well, hardly any) bemoaning the fact that the year's most riveting and satisfying acting discovery, Catalina Saavedra of "The Maid," doesn't stand a ghost of a chance of being nominated for a best-actress Oscar? ("The Maid" is, ironically, nominated for a Golden Globe. It doesn't even qualify for the foreign-language Oscar. And the Golden Globes are less significant than the Oscars why, exactly?)

Last year's Globes ceremony was washed out by the Writers' Guild strike, and a number of wags have since suggested that some Hollywood union or other had better stage a brief work stoppage every January, just to keep this largely meaningless methadone-for-Oscar-addicts off the airwaves.

The more casual, spontaneous precursor to the Academy Awards honors some unexpected newcomers -- and plenty of unexpected remarks.

Monday night's Golden Globes included a bevy of unexpected winners, from Sacha Baron Cohen (who won best actor in a musical/comedy for "Borat") to Eddie Murphy (who took home his first major award, best supporting actor for his role in "Dreamgirls"). But the unexpected comments were the highlight of the night.

Isaiah Washington got things off to a good start on the red carpet when, in a clumsy attempt to make up for his alleged homophobic slurs on the set of "Grey's Anatomy" earlier this season, he announced, "I love gay. I wanted to be gay. Please let me be gay." Yes, please let us be gay, too. Let us be a gay, black man. No, let us be a straight, Latino teenage girl. No, maybe we'd rather be a thriving rhododendron, or a hamster with an outgoing personality ...

Then again, we might want to be a female actor, now that they're not all hungry-looking beauty queens. Amazingly enough, this was a very good year to be a nonwhite, non-anorexic woman (Jennifer Hudson won best supporting actress for her role in "Dreamgirls," America Ferrera won best actress in a TV comedy for "Ugly Betty," and Shonda Rhimes' "Grey's Anatomy" won best TV drama) or an older woman (Helen Mirren won for lead roles in both "The Queen" and the HBO miniseries "Elizabeth I," and Meryl Streep won a best supporting actress award for "The Devil Wears Prada").

(Page Six)

Golden Globes winners: The big winners at the Golden Globes Monday night were Helen Mirren -- who collected trophies for best actress in a movie (drama) for "The Queen" and best actress in a TV miniseries for "Elizabeth I" -- and "Dreamgirls," which won best motion picture (musical or comedy), best supporting actor (Eddie Murphy) and best supporting actress (Jennifer Hudson). Martin Scorsese won best director, though "Babel" beat out his film, "The Departed," for best movie (drama).

Series

The refined comic stylings of Benny Hill are remembered on Biography (8 p.m. Fri., A&E). The reality series Popstars (8:30 p.m. Fri., WB) really is the girl version of "Making the Band"; last week's audition episode was practically identical to the "Making the Band" pilot, with clips of wannabes imitating Christina Aguilera and Mariah Carey in hopes of winning a slot. Except "Popstars" was even nastier, showing a long snarky segment on the most pathetically talentless of the lot. Grade A cheese. Mad TV (11 p.m. Sat., Fox) has a presidential inauguration special, if you feel like laughing about it. On King of the Hill (7:30 p.m. Sun., Fox), Hank's beloved truck may be headed for the scrapheap. Malcolm's family gets into a feud with the new neighbors on Malcolm in the Middle (8:30 p.m. Sun., Fox). Scully and Doggett battle a murder suspect who's so, um, flexible he puts old bogeyman Tooms to shame on The X-Files (9 p.m. Sun., Fox). Nikita suffers from mysterious blackouts, much like California, on La Femme Nikita (10 p.m. Sun., USA).

Specials

"I feel like this is a dream -- and I apologize for how I dressed some of you."

-- Ray Romano at the Golden Globes

Oh, no, Ray, the sights you saw at the Golden Globes were real, a waking nightmare of style and celebrity. The hair issues alone were maddening. Were Janet McTeer and Liam Neeson aware that they were both wearing versions of the same awful hairdo? Does Phil Collins understand that the remaining hair on his head looks like a butt crack? Was David Spade doing an impression of Peter Brady trying to grow a mustache? Did some sort of evil porcupine smite males and females alike with hatchet-job forehead wisps and greasy shine to match? Or was it just the same scissors accident that happened to Courtney Love's dress?

Look at the Associated Press wire on Salon if you want to know who won at this boring farce of an awards show. The more frightening story is that it looks like actors are actually taking the Globes seriously. Jim Carrey anointed himself "the Tom Hanks of the Golden Globes," while Halle Berry claimed that "in just five seconds, by announcing my name, hopefully that burden [of discrimination] will be removed from me," she said. "This is for my inner self and my struggle."

John Dean guests. Double Dare 2000 (9:30 p.m. Sat., Nickelodeon) premieres. It's an update of the family game show from the '80s, but the premise is the same: make sure mom and dad get slimed. On The Simpsons (8 p.m. Sun., Fox), Homer and family house-sit for Mr. Burns. You can pretty much guess where it goes from there. Britney Spears is the guest voice. Felicity (8 p.m. Sun., WB) has a Very Special Episode, but it's not what you think. It's a tribute to "The Twilight Zone," shot in black and white, in which Felicity's visit to a clinic for the lovelorn has eerie results. Also, the contents of Meghan's famous box are revealed.
